Participation in China Institute’s Summer Study in Beijing program is open only to high school students. In order for students to take full advantage of the home stay, we give preference to those who have studied Mandarin Chinese prior to our arrival in Beijing. If you are not currently a student of Chinese please contact us about our new high school programs for "beginners". To apply to our program, applicants must also be in good academic and disciplinary standing.

We rely on teacher recommendations, student essays, examples of the applicant’s work, a transcript of current grades and any objective testing results available, and an interview (in person or via the telephone) to help us determine if a given applicant will make a good ambassador for their school and country. Successful applicants aren't necessarily the most exemplary language students. They must, however, be flexible with strong interpersonal and communication skills and be motivated to master Chinese and understand the culture inside and outside of the classroom. Qualities that we look for are: the ability to adjust to unfamiliar and challenging circumstances, a sense of humor, common sense, and the capacity to be sociable, enthusiastic and organized, as well as a sense of responsibility, good manners and drive.

APPLICATION PROCESS

As soon as you make the decision to apply it is advisable that you send in the application form, along with the non-refundable $50 application fee. The sooner we receive the application form and fee, the sooner we will be able to schedule your interview.

Starting in mid February, the process of reviewing applications and rendering decisions takes approximately one month. We will email confirmation of receipt of each student’s application and email and mail admissions decisions approximately two to three weeks after the application deadline, provided there are no missing parts to the application. We do not give out decisions over the telephone. Please note that due to scheduling requirements with our airline this year we have no other choice but to require students to be ready to confirm acceptance or decline of admission to our program upon notification by email. Therefore please be sure to provide us with an email address that you check often.
