| Who We Are: A Unique History A Unique Opportunity China Institute was established in 1926 by a group of Chinese and American educators that included the American educational philosopher John Dewey of Columbia University and Hu Shih, Chinese educator, President of Peking University and China’s ambassador to the United States. It is the oldest educational institution in the United States focused exclusively on China. For over 80 years China Institute has fostered greater understanding between the people of the United States and the people of China. One of the many ways we have sought to fulfill this mission is through a wide variety of educational programs and by teaching the Chinese language. Since it was chartered by the NY State Board of Regents in 1933, China Institute has taught Chinese to adults. A decade ago, this program was expanded to reach young children. Currently, China Institute has been working with several of the top independent schools in New York City as well as the New York City Department of Education to create new language programs at the high school level. With some 300 students each semester, China Institute currently operates the largest non-university based Chinese language program in New York City. |
With our summer immersion program in Beijing, People’s Republic of China, China Institute intends to provide high school students with a uniquely relevant context within which to come to understand China, its people and their cultures. Also visit us at our main home page at www.chinainstitute.org
